Victor von Mortis was born in Eastern Europe. The von Mortis family were the decedents of a long line of aristocracy, but thought they lived in a large castle, much of Victor's family's wealth was gone. Victor grew up in that dark castle, being schooled by tutors brought in by his father. His father had been trained in medicine in London in the previous century, back when bleeding and leeches were still prescribed. Victor's studies were in what could best be described as "Dark Medicine."
When Victor was a young boy, his family was forced to leave Europe- there was speculation that Victor's father had been conducting unethical experiments on the local peasants. They fled on a dark, moonless night, and boarded a ship headed for America. Little is know about the fate of the von Mortis family after they left Europe. There is no record of their arrival in America, and for years the von Mortis name disappeared. Then, at the beginning of the last century, Victor von Mortis appeared in California, and soon married the daughter of a local family. He build for his new bride a great mansion, and it was there that they were wed. The morning after the wedding, the bride was found dead in the garden. Everyone suspected that Victor had killed her, saying that she had discovered some dark terrible secret during her first night at Mortis Manor, but no one could prove his involvement, and Victor had become too powerful to openly accuse. No one dared, except for the brides brother, who demanded that Victor be charged with his sister's murder. The brother's body was found a few days later, hanging from a balcony at Mortis Manor.
After his bride's death, Victor von Mortis withdrew into the dark shadows of Mortis Manor. Some time later the mansion became "Mortis Manor, Home for the Criminally Insane". Both the mansion and the doctor himself have been a dark part of the community for as long as anyone can remember. Some say that the doctor experiments on the patients of Mortis Manor, though to what end no one dares to speculate. All that is known is that few people who venture into the manor ever return.
